A familiar name can describe different vehicles

“Golf cart” is a common shopping term. Low-speed vehicle, or LSV, is a regulated vehicle classification with applicable federal requirements. A vehicle’s appearance, accessories or advertised speed alone does not establish that classification. Ask for the vehicle identification and certification documentation when comparing an unfamiliar cart.

Certification is one part of the road-use decision

Federal certification does not mean every road is available. State and local rules determine operating permissions and other requirements. Before a purchase, identify your intended route and ask the relevant authorities about registration, insurance and road restrictions. Check the entire route, including crossings and connecting roads, rather than only the street outside your home.

Ask for a clear handover

Your dealer should explain which documents accompany the vehicle and which steps you need to complete. Keep copies of the purchase paperwork and vehicle identification, and ask whom to contact if a registration office needs more information.
