LSV Requirements: A Checklist Before Your First Public-Road Trip
Prepare vehicle documents, registration questions and a permitted route before taking delivery.

Review LSV requirements before your first public-road trip. Organize the vehicle documents, local registration questions and permitted route with your dealer.
Start with the vehicle documents
All Coala models are LSV certified, including for California. Ask the dealer to explain the certification documentation, vehicle identification and purchase paperwork you will receive. Check that the vehicle information matches the cart being delivered. Keep those documents accessible for registration and later ownership questions.
Federal equipment requirements are described in FMVSS No. 500. The standard and the rules for operating on a particular road serve different purposes; a purchase checklist cannot replace either.
Check the route and local requirements
Contact your state motor-vehicle authority and the appropriate local road authority about registration, insurance, driver requirements and permitted roads. In California, LSV road-use provisions include restrictions tied to road speed limits and exceptions. Consult the current official rules for your route rather than relying on a nationwide “street legal” description.
Write down destinations and every connecting road. If one segment is prohibited, identify a permitted alternative before setting out. Permission to use a private community’s paths does not automatically extend to surrounding public roads.
Complete a delivery walkaround
Ask the dealer to explain controls, restraints, lighting, brakes, mirrors and charging. Have any missing documentation or equipment concern resolved before public-road use. Record a support contact and keep the owner’s manual with your purchase records.
Is certification the same as registration?
No. Certification concerns the vehicle; registration and operating permissions involve additional jurisdiction-specific requirements. Read golf cart vs. LSV for the distinction.
